Who should produce the content for a campaign
For people with a campaign concept deciding where the material should be made.
In short
Creator-made material wins on credibility and platform fit. Dedicated production wins on control, repeatability and the ability to use the material beyond the creator’s channel. The choice follows where the material is meant to live - not which option looks cheaper.

Three options
| Option | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Made by the creator | Native to the platform, credible, shorter process. | Less control over the form, limited use outside the channel. |
| Dedicated production with the creator | Control over the message, image quality, reusable material. | Higher cost, longer lead time, risk of material that reads as an advert. |
| Brand-made, distributed by the creator | Full control, consistency with the rest of the communication. | Lowest credibility - the community recognises outside production. |
A practical rule: the closer the material is meant to stay to the creator’s channel, the more freedom the creator should have. The wider it will be used, the more sense dedicated production makes.
What genuinely drives cost and timing
- The number of format variants - one piece in three aspect ratios is three edits, not one.
- The number of approval rounds - each round is usually several calendar days, not hours.
- The shooting location - a set outside the creator’s own space changes the cost structure entirely.
- Usage rights - a licence for paid media or brand channels is priced separately.
- The creator’s own publishing calendar - often fixed weeks ahead.
The first two account for most timeline overruns in creator campaigns. It is worth fixing them as numbers in the contract rather than as descriptions.
A brief that works
- The goal of the material and what should happen after someone watches it.
- The boundaries: what must not be said or shown, with the reasoning.
- Mandatory elements - a short list, not a script.
- Format, length and target platform.
- The number of revision rounds and the deadline for each.
A brief is a frame, not a script to read out. The creator knows their audience better than anyone on the brand side, and that is the entire advantage of this channel - a script written end to end by the brand cancels it.
Frequently asked questions
Can creator-made material be used in advertising?
Yes, if the licence covers it and that was settled before production. Permission agreed after publication usually costs more, because the creator is pricing a different scope of use than originally assumed.
How many revision rounds are standard?
There is no industry standard, but the number should be written into the contract before the start. Changes beyond the agreed scope are a separate arrangement, not extra work thrown in.
Does dedicated production always produce better material?
Technically better - usually yes. More effective inside the creator’s channel - not always. Material that looks like an advertising production in a channel that does not resemble one is often received worse than a simpler piece made by the creator.
